Nexus One Follow-Up: 1 Year In

This post has been sitting in my drafts as “6 months in” for, well, six months.  So I ordered my Nexus One on January 5th, 2010.  It’s now been a year; and what a year it has been.  I was reading over some of my old posts about the Nexus One a few weeks back and I was surprised by how future proof I thought the phone would be…  I’m not upset with where I […]

Pinned Tabs in Google Chrome

I recently discovered the use of Google Chrome’s “pinned tabs” feature.  I used this for a few days, decided to write about it, and then stopped using them.  So what happened? What are “pinned tabs”?  If you right click a tab in Google Chrome, you can click “pin tab” and it will make it into a “mini-tab” (see picture above) which doesn’t take up much room.  This is good if you have a few tabs […]

Internet Explorer 9 Beta

Internet Explorer 9 (Beta) has finally arrived.  Generally, this wouldn’t be exciting news.  People would say “oh they made a new Internet Explorer.  I actually use a decent browser…so I don’t care”.  But Microsoft actually delivered with this browser!  Keep in mind while reading my “review” that I never really used this for more than a few minutes…but in those few minutes, I was really impressed with how much this version is improved over IE […]

My Essential Chrome Extensions

Here is my list of extensions that makes Chrome usable for me.  Keep in mind that I used Firefox for a solid four years before switching to Chrome, so a lot of these extensions duplicate the behavior of different Firefox features. AdThwart – This extension does a decent job of blocking advertisements on sites.  I really wouldn’t recommend using it unless ads bother you that much because a lot of people (including me) make money […]

Chrome vs. Firefox

CHROME VS FIREFOX! The epic showdown of (IMO) the two best browsers on the market.  Two years ago Firefox had a clear lead – if you weren’t using Internet Explorer, you were almost certainly using Firefox.  Then suddenly, Chrome entered the scene.  Originally it didn’t have extensions and had some other quirks, so most Firefox fans didn’t take too much notice.  Now, however, Chrome is steadily gaining market share, while Firefox is heading (slowly) in […]

College Laptop Recommendations

So I’m not in college…yet. But that doesn’t mean I can’t recommend college laptops! Granted, this is a loose recommendation, so I’ll start off with the basics and go from there. If money is no object… I’d seriously consider going with a MacBook Pro or similar high-end aluminum PC alternative. I’m not at all an Apple fanboy. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t recognize the quality of their products. MacBook Pros are physically amazing…they’re sleek, […]

WordPress Image Padding

So I just ran into a bit of an “issue” with WordPress and the way it handles images by default.  This is on a per-theme basis, but for whatever reason my theme didn’t already have image padding, so the text went right up to the side of the image.  There is a simple fix! First, click on Appearance (from the Dashboard), and then click on Editor.  Scroll to the bottom of that stylesheet and add: […]

New Site

Today I bought the domain www.freetechnologytips.com and set up WordPress on it.  From this point on, I will try to make sure every post has an image, and try to write more useful posts and try to write more “elegantly”.  I just looked back at some of my old posts and they’re pretty pointless (in fact I might delete some). The default WordPress editor is extremely limited and annoying…not to mention puts the text RIGHT […]

Update

Soon I’m going to be moving to a “real” website…that’s running on the WordPress platform. I’m planning on paying $50 or so a year for domain and web hosting and having some ads to hopefully subsidize it. A recent project I worked on was creating the site (and underlying architecture of) http://wtad.wyomingcityschools.org . On my own site I’m planning to have it work similarly…different pages containing different posts…however I want to have different pages display […]
